Ontario to graduate fewer teachers

The Ontario government says it’s slashing in half the number of new students admitted to teacher’s college each year and doubling the time it takes for them to graduate.

The goal is to stem the rise of new graduates who cannot find jobs. About 6,000 of 9,000 new teachers get jobs each year, the government said.

The province said in a release Wednesday the proposed changes would begin September 2015. Students will have to take four semesters, up from two semesters, and the number of new students admitted each year would be cut by 50 per cent to about 4,500.

“This will help address an oversupply of graduates, enabling Ontario’s qualified teachers to find jobs,” the government said.
